The Crescendo Big Band was formed in 1980 as a rehearsal band, bringing together musicians who wished to develop their skills and enjoy playing big band music. However, they quickly realised that to truly improve, they needed expert guidance.

Enter Trevor Emeny, an established and highly experienced saxophonist with an enviable reputation and a strong following as a jazz soloist throughout the Midlands. Under Trevor’s leadership, the band made significant progress, reaching a level where they could confidently perform for live audiences.

The Early Years at Hayden Court

Late in 1981, Crescendo Big Band gave its first public concert at the Hayden Court Hotel in Cheltenham. The enthusiastic response encouraged Trevor to organise regular concerts at Hayden Court, held on the last Sunday of every month — a tradition that continued successfully for four years.

A New Home at Gupshill Manor

In 1985, the Hayden Court Hotel was sold and re-vamped, forcing the band to seek a new venue. They relocated to Gupshill Manor Inn in Tewkesbury, where they have remained ever since. The monthly concert tradition continued, solidifying Crescendo Big Band’s reputation as a must-see live jazz ensemble.

Leadership and Growth

From the very beginning, Bob Lee was a band manager and presenter, playing a crucial role in shaping the Crescendo experience. His vast knowledge of jazz, particularly big band music, combined with his expertise as a radio presenter, ensured that every Crescendo concert was an engaging and immersive event for audiences. Bob continues to support the band despite retiring from his long-standing role as manager and presenter following recent illness.

After 19 years of leadership, Trevor Emeny handed the baton to pianist and arranger Paul Buck. Under Paul’s expert guidance, the band continued to improve, reaching a standard far beyond that of an average rehearsal band. This musical excellence enabled them to attract high-calibre guest artists and top-tier musicians.

A talented composer and arranger, Paul Buck also contributed unique music charts written exclusively for Crescendo Big Band. These one-of-a-kind arrangements became a signature feature of their concerts, adding a distinctive touch that audiences couldn’t hear anywhere else.

In June 2008, leadership passed to Tony Sheppard, who continued to lead the band with passion and expertise. Sadly, Tony Sheppard passed away in March 2024. We deeply miss him — his rip-roaring trombone, jazzy keyboards, commanding baton, and smoky baritone vocals — and we know you do too.

Today

After Tony became unwell, Vince Ford took over as musical director and now shares the role with Dominic Franks. The musical programme is managed by Dominic Franks and Dianne Arthurs, with expert guidance from Bob Lee.

Now in its fifth decade, Crescendo Big Band remains dedicated to bringing the energy of big band swing to new and returning audiences. With its legacy of musical excellence, a commitment to unique arrangements, and a roster of outstanding musicians, the band continues to delight jazz lovers.
